It seems like every day that you turn on the news you hear another tragic story about how some child has pulled the TV down onto itself, crushing the child underneath it and terminating its life. It is one of the saddest stories that you ever hear, and one that scares many parents because we all have TV sets in our bedrooms, even in our children’s rooms.
This is what is the scariest part of all. You want to make it so that your child can enjoy watching television in his or her room, even if they are young child, but you have to worry about the possibility that TV can become a death trap to them. It scares parents across the nation.
With the saddest part of this whole thing is that your TV doesn’t need to be this much of a concern for you. There are many things that you can do to prevent your TV from being an instrument of death against your child, and so here are some ways on how to baby proof your TV stand.
Remove That Which Draws – the first thing to understand is that your child is going to come to your TV stand if there are a bunch of objects on it that piqued his or her interest. This is why it is important to take down any objects that may attract the attention of your child that are on the television stand. If there are not objects that draw your child toward it then you are putting him or her in a lot better and safer situation.
Use a Higher/Lower Stand – this one may seem to not make any sense at all, but the truth is you either need to go extremely high or extremely low. If the stand is up much higher so that the child cannot reach the television set at all, then you remove the possibility that he or she can pull down the television set. This is why many choose stands that are attached to the wall at least 4 feet above the floor area.
The other option is to choose a television stand that is lower to the ground. This ensures that should the television set fall over that it is not falling much of a distance so there is a minimal chance that your child will be hurt.
Secure the Television – you also want to make sure that whatever kind of stand you put the TV on, that you make sure that it is securely fastened to that stand. If the TV is unable to come off of the stand then you are greatly protecting your child. This can be done by using straps or other kinds of fasteners that will hold the television in place so that it cannot topple off of your stand.
What you see here is that it doesn’t take a whole lot to ensure that the safety of your child is protected. Implement these few measures and you will save yourself a lot of heartache.
